The commanding authority of the Lagos Traffic Radio in it’s peculiar operating focus has come to the fore, as the broadcast station has successfully enlarged it’s broadcast influence with Mr Tayo Akanle as the Chief Servant.
Speaking with ThePageNews on the success of the Radio Project at the weekend, the LTR GM, informed that from initially focusing on road traffic, the station now covers other modes of transportation like air, rail, and maritime shipping.
Described as the best of it’s kind in Africa, Akanle mentioned that the station’s focus is on providing traffic information and travel advisory on all modes of transportation in Lagos State.
“Our vision is to be the most reliable radio station providing traffic information in Africa. This ambitious vision is anchored on a mission, which is to provide timely and accurate traffic information to commuters, using modern technology for enhanced productivity”
The station, he said, has achieved significant milestones under his watch, notable amongst them is the expansion of it’s coverage.
“By this, we now provide traffic information on movements on the availability of Lagos State Ferries including their movements, and that of the private sectors as well. Overtime, we created the necessary awareness for waterways movement, raising the awareness level amongst Lagosians from less than 2% in 2019 to about 15% in 2024.
“This applies to rail traffic information as we have been doing this even before the coming of Blue and Red lines of Mr. Governor through our partnership with Nigerian Railway Corporation.
In all these, we already keyed into the Transportation and Traffic Management pillar of the T.H.E.M.E.S plus Agenda of Mr. Governor, specifically, the multi modal integrated transportation policy”
Another significant milestone the GM announced, is the Increased Frequency of updates.
Traffic updates he noted , are now provided every 10 minutes as an improvement to the initial 15-20 minutes frequency .
” One of the landmark reforms which we brought to the station is the overhaul of the station’s social media and online presence. This has led to increase on our official Facebook page from 4,000 Followers in 2019 to 147,000 in 2025, just as there is also an increase on our X handle from 15,000 Followers same year to 57,400 in 2025.
“We have successfully embarked on online broadcasting through Live Streaming. The station commenced live streaming of its programmes in January 2020. Our online presence is not only robust, the impact cannot be overemphasized.
“We cannot but to mention our Live Incident Motorbike Traffic Reports where we deployed motor bikes to give live reports on any incident induced traffic logjam through providing on-the-spot assessment and report including provision, after scanning possible, of alternative roads” he also mentioned .
The GM also submitted that the station has also leveraged innovation and technology to enhance efficiency.
“This we have done through the Introduction of our legacy project, the Live Camera Update (LCU), a feat that was achieved in 2023. This is an infrastructure that provides real-time traffic reports through live feeds from CCTV cameras spread across different roads in Lagos State. Literarily, we can see real time happenings on the over 300 roads inside the studio with aim to increase to about 3,000 as indicated by our partner, the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology”
Lagos Traffic Radio operates on 96.1 FM frequency.
